I was recently asked ‘What advice would you give your younger self?’
It is such common advice but the best advice I could give my younger self is to ‘Follow your heart’.
Yes, I received this advice when I was younger, the issue, I had no concept of how to tap into what was in my heart. Nor how to actually follow it!
The first hurdle, tapping into what is in my heart, was overcome in two ways:
First, try as many different things as possible. From this pool of experience, there will be some things I liked more than others. The things I really really liked, I would call a passion.
Second, figure out what I am passionate about in life and do that. When I am no longer passionate about that subject, figure out what I am passionate about in life and do that.
Those simple steps illuminated what is in my heart, but how do I follow it?!
Following what is in my heart is hard with all the societal distractions and demands placed on me by the world I live in.
The trick in overcoming that hurdle is learning to not give a fuck.
Every human is allotted only so many fucks to give out in a lifetime. Giving fucks away on caring what others think of you, what others want of you, how others think you should live a life, is a waste of fucks!
These fucks are mine, I can give them away, or I can use them to chase what is in my heart. To bring to life the ideas in my head. To create a life I want to live. To love whoever I choose. That’s what is worthy of my fucks.
So to my younger self I say this:
“Try something new everyday, follow your passions, and don’t give away your fucks to those that don’t deserve it. You deserve it.”
